NZAID Prioritizes Basic Education in Vanuatu

A big chunk of NZAID's 2009/2010 budget for Vanuatu will go to basic education, an agency official told Devex Early Intelligence.

Funds will be used to support the 2007-2016 Vanuatu Education Sector Strategy. The representative said that the intervention is still in the pre-sector support phase as Vanuatu's Ministry of Education needs further strengthening before sector budget aid can commence. This is the first step towards developing a sector-wide approach.

New Zealand's aid agency is also working with the Asian Development Bank to improve shipping services. The official mentioned the possibility of business opportunities resulting from an ensuing project but said that things should be clearer by the end of the third quarter, when the design work has been completed.
