Since the early days of the U.S. aid freeze, many in the development sector have expected, or at least hoped, that foundations and philanthropic organizations would help fill the funding void being left by deep government agency cuts.
While it’s still too early to measure the exact scope and nature of such a shift, we have been able to track job posting data to identify which foundations have been hiring the most in recent months.

Is anyone still hiring chiefs of party?
It’s difficult to think of a singular global development role that has been more affected by the dismantling of the U.S. Agency for International Development than the chief of party.
COPs were traditionally one of the most senior positions for global development professionals who specialize in project management, which made it one of the higher-paying jobs in the development sector. But in just a matter of months, opportunities have all but disappeared — with just 15 job postings being advertised on Devex since the aid freeze was first announced on Jan. 24. This is a 94.1% decrease compared to the same period last year.
Of the few opportunities currently available for aspiring COPs, the global nonprofit ACDI/VOCA is seeking chief of party candidates for the Food for Progress program, a U.S. Department of Agriculture-funded project that aims to support agricultural, economic, and infrastructure development activities in low- and middle-income countries such as Colombia, Ethiopia, Ghana, and Kenya.

Around the watercooler
News and views from around global development worth knowing about.
• Inside USAID’s ‘shady’ transition. Earlier this week, USAID staffers were forced to race against a tight deadline for a small number of roles now at the State Department. One current USAID employee called the process “shady, rushed, and back-handed.”
• ‘House Hunters,’ U.N. edition. Wanted: cheap housing in an affordable city for U.N. institutions, diplomats, and civil servants forced by high rents out of Geneva and New York City.
• WHO secures essential funds at WHA78. At the 78th World Health Assembly, member states pledged an additional $170 million to WHO’s investment round and approved a 20% increase in assessed contributions — a rare boost of flexible, predictable funding.
