Nascent but thriving networks of food banks and school meal programs, often repurposing food that would have gone to waste, have sprung up across India, helping to bolster food security in the country.
The initiatives sit alongside other sustainability-oriented efforts also helping to fight rising costs and food insecurity — such as community-driven self-help groups of farmers who have pooled together to avoid costly chemical fertilizers and make their own organic version. In Bihar state, one group has switched over to “organic farming and adopted practices such as crop rotation, diverse planting, and strategic use of cover crops” to help prevent soil erosion and boost nutritional quality, Neha Bhatt reports for Devex.
This is part of a wave of concerted efforts across India by groups including the government, NGOs, industry, and civil society to tackle food insecurity and malnutrition by promoting sustainable food practices.
