MASAKA, Uganda — The sound of the school bell in central Uganda, southwest of Kampala, called learners back to class after an hour-long health break. Inside the classroom, rows of seats remained unoccupied as students recited the shapes and figures displayed on the wall.
Geometric shapes like polygons, circles, ellipses, parallelograms, trapezoids, spheres, cubes, and even pyramids blended well with arithmetic figures and letters of the alphabet.
“The pupils made these learning materials out of recycled plastic by themselves. This has helped them cut costs of buying learning materials while also making a connection with environmental protection,” said a beaming Francis Ssematimba, the head teacher at St. Maria Goretti Primary School.
